Driving Data to Intelligence (DDI) is a Group Michelin offer specializing in usage and driving behavior data. DDI’s mission is to contribute to defining tomorrow’s mobility: a mobility which will be smarter and safer thanks to big data. Based on our expertise and data*, we have analyzed the never-seen-before mobility context from the past few weeks. As indicated by our heat map above, the lockdown in France starting March 17th has led to a remarkable situation for automotive mobility: a drastic decrease on all indicators with less trips, less frequency, on shortened distances, and predominantly locally-based.

Less mobility influencing driving behaviors

At DDI, we estimate and define driving scores in our models: our expertise in driving behavior analysis and our scoring models enabled us to identify some significant changes in driving behaviors during the lockdown. We have seen significant trends on two dimensions: anticipation and curve velocity. Fewer trips and less automotive use from many French people have led to less traffic, better visibility while driving, and has impacted driving behaviors as a result of the lockdown.

Improvement on anticipation

Based on enriched data and a continuous analysis model (throughout the journey, not event-only based), we build a driving behavior analysis that we deliver to users through our DDI driving score**. Anticipation is one of the three dimensions that we analyze in our model. It evaluates braking distances and braking strength from drivers. During lockdown, we have observed a significant improvement in anticipation scores (+2% on average). In some instances, up to +4% improvement when comparied with scores before the lockdown. Braking distances are longer, strength is reduced : stopping and braking actions are more anticipated and well prepared in a context where automotive mobility is significantly reduced.

Higher curve velocity

Velocity is another dimension we analyze in our model, with specific attention given to curves. By assigning a value to an individual’s curve velocity, we are able to correlate their performance to the overall aggregated performance. During lockdown, we observe a significant decrease for velocity scores in curves (-10% average). With some instances down to (-13%) in comparison with the reference before lockdown. Curve velocity is structurally faster than before lockdown in a context where traffic is particularly low. Let’s stay all cautious on roads, road hazard hasn’t vanished. Innovating to improve road safety and save lives, that’s our mission at DDI. If you’re interested in getting more information on analysis like this one that we can produce for a specific question/domain or to discover all our offers, please get in touch and we can discuss based on your business needs (data, ad hoc studies, scoring/coaching solutions for prevention plans or connected insurance….) *This analysis is based on the data sample from our “Better Driving Community” (BDC) initiative, in partnership with Colas and BNP Paribas Cardif, whose mission is to contribute to a safer road. If you live in France and you want to participate, please follow this link: http://betterdrivingcommunity.com/ Our analysis reflects the automotive mobility from our members before and during lockdown. Our calculation is based on aggregated data from active vehicles from the BDC community, on the French territory. As with all samples, this may or may not represent the exact behavior of a wider population. Changes and trends are calculated and compared to a baseline value  – The baseline value is the average value observed before lockdown from 1st Feb to 16th March – The analysis shows trends vs this reference on days and weeks after official lockdown application from 17th March to 27th April ** DDI driving score : Refer to Better Driving Community application or Ideal Driver Pro application available in stores and get in touch to know more and schedule a demo.
